New Material
South Carolina PetroglyphsWe are currently broadening our scope to include other regional and national rock art research efforts of exceptional breadth evidencing a high component of public education and generous cooperative consultation. The Gottschall Rock ShelterUMRARA is pleased to present several articles and photographs on the Gottschall site, one of the finest rock art sites in Wisconsin. For thirteen years Dr. Robert Salzer and his crew have been meticulously excavating the sediment beneath walls that contain over forty pictographs. The paintings, as well as what was found "in situ" at the rock shelter, are chronicled here using photos, drawings, and text provided by Bob Salzer and Beloit College.
In addition to our new postings, we have
Jack Steinbring's announcements
regarding the 1999 International Rock Art Congress (IRAC)
conference to be held in Ripon, Wisconsin as well as his report
on the Fisk Site. UMRARA is pleased to present several
articles and photographs on the Gottschall site, one of the
finest rock art sites in Wisconsin. For thirteen years
Dr. Robert Salzer
and
Grace Rajnovich
and crew have been meticulously
excavating the sediment beneath walls that contain over forty
pictographs. The paintings, as well as what was found "in
situ" at the rock shelter, are chronicled here using
photos, drawings, and text provided by Bob Salzer and Beloit
College.
Dan
Higginbottom, of the Wilford Archaeology Laboratory at the
University of Minnesota and an authority on lithics in the
Midwest, has written an excellent introduction to Minnesota lithics.
Kevin
Callahan
, a doctoral student of anthropology at the
University of Minnesota, describes the application of the study
of lithic and old copper age projectile points to the dating of
rock art in Minnesota.
We are also reprinting two short articles
by
Dr. Guy Gibbon
, director of the
Dept. of Interdisciplinary Archaeological Studies at the
University of Minnesota. The first is on the biotic provinces in
this region and the second is an overview of the pre-contact
people of Minnesota.
And we have five articles by Kevin
Callahan, and four site reports from
Deborah Morse-Kahn
, M.A., regional historian,
Minnesota. Callahan begins with a general introduction to the
rock art found in Minnesota followed by a commentary on the
various images, a report on the Nett Lake site of northwestern
Minnesota, a paper on the Fort Ransom Writing Rock in North
Dakota, and an account of his own experiences with atlatls.
Morse-Kahn presents four Reports from Southeastern Minnesota -an
Introduction, the Fisk site, the Bluffs Rockshelters, and Reno cave.
Thanks for taking the time to peruse our
site, we hope that it will serve to both entertain and inform
you. - Charles Bailey.
