The Wisconsin State Historical Society, in coordination with the Office of the State Archaeologist and the Office of School Services, has released a new publication for children, DIGGING ANDDISCOVERY: WISCONSIN ARCHAEOLOGY (1997).

The authors, Diane Young Holliday of the WI OSA, and Bobbie Malone of the WI OSS, have crafted a beautifully readable, well-organized, and especially well-produced paperback, the first title for the Society's New Badger History Series.

DIGGING AND DISCOVERY incorporates the contributions and counsel of some of Wisconsin's hardest-working archaeologists as well as representatives of critical adjunct agencies such as the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey.

Of particular interest--and very possibly precedent-setting in textbook publishing for American primary and younger secondary school readers--is a chapter on rock art, highlighting Wisconsin's significant petroglyphic and pictographic imagery, using the magnificent Red Horn glyphs at Wisconsin's Gottschall site as an enchanting background for the study of mythic and symbolic imagery.
